There is nothing in this world that keeps you honest more than telling people what you are doing.
For a while, I have been blaming the pandemic for the additional pounds that I have accumulated. Well, I have some goals I recently set and it wont be right unless I create a wealth of health (WOH) goal. The movement of WOH!!!
I always say that IT starts with YOU, in this perspective, it is ME. My goal overall is to have better health. For measurement purposes I hope to lose some weight and to put my money where my mouth is I will set up a Goal with my Aspiration Plan and my Back up Plan (Plan A/Plan B)
To gain support of course I started a group on linkedin called Wealth Of Health (WOH), I mean why not!
While I am trying to complete my goals and maintain for my future why not find support and talk about shared success. Here is my plan:
Exercise daily 30 minutes, every morning. (7 days a week)
Plan A: For the next three months – and reset goal for new timeline. Reward if goal is achieved.
Plan B: For the next six months – no reward just self love, if goal is not achieved.
Aiming for 2lbs a week and a healthy heart for about 30lbs.
Maintain a healthy diet, which I already do.
Stay happy, positive and focused.
Reward: Brand new suit, oh yes!
If you are interested in doing this with me or giving feedback, support or telling me about your journey. I will post and share your story if you like!
I will definitely want to set up virtual group meetings and possibly events around this movement of #WOH. Your wealth of knowledge is important to me.
So much going on in the world and we still need the happiness and wicked glee we all enjoy of this spooky time of year. One night to break free and mentally dress as your inner monster, Rockstar, superhero, French maid, etc. For businesses experiencing this Pandemic it also offers relief to parents with children who have nowhere to go or nothing to do.
Of course, due to social distancing and the every scary COVID-19 lurking everywhere and anywhere there must be a silver lining as that is what I am all about; one of my huge splurges is decoration that is Pinterest worthy.
An approachable haunted porch or stoop to creep up on and Trick or Treat or Not.
Will you be handing out candy or something else? This year we placed an apothecary jar filled with masks in our treat bowl shaped like a cat of the night. Only to increase safety for our children.
Halloween is a huge business driver for many industries. Candy in 2017 sold in the billions one of the highest peaks and last year still maintaining that level. Undeniably, this year this we will need to wait and see what the trends are, but we know we will be in the low range.
Many stores pre purchased from their wholesalers this inventory so they may be at a huge loss, towards the end. A lot of sales November 1, this year on many Halloween items. The savvy shopper will pick up those deal to add to their collections for 2021.
According to Forbes, we se in the past 10 years, the first peak in 2012 at 8 billion then pretty steady until the next peak in 2017 at 9.1 billion, which was the highest point and then slowly dropped but maintained by 2019 with 8.8 billion in the Halloween expenditures.
M&M’s and Reese’s are still the top sellers. Although we love Candy Corns and Jolly Ranchers any thing wrapped is truly the safest always especially during this pandemic.
So far online and discount stores are the highest level where transactions are truly turning those sales and units per transaction (UPT). The biggest decline was felt in catalogs, unless it was catalog to online and this is because of pandemic.
For my little spices and that is out doggies they are also in the mood being fashionable as always. Coco who was just groomed, is sporting is Candy Corn Ascot and Ginger always ready to play with his Skull chew toy all can be found at PetSmart.
What ever you decide to do make sure it is festive the best way YOU know how, that’s all for now as I have many other wicked things to do on this journey of Fannytasticlife!
We all need to respect the necessities that life requires but what about the wants we constantly reach for and try to glimpse at and dare hope to touch. An in between does exist and this is called the desires, the whims, treats, pampers, sweet satisfaction of momentary bliss, especially on this journey of Fannytasticlife!
Through life, just living we need food, water, shelter… right… right we can all relate. Abraham Maslow, in 1943 wrote a paper, ” A theory of motivation,” although scientifically there was much conflict with the measurement of this theory: Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the bottom line resonated with most individuals.
Five tiers include:
The physiological needs of air, water, food shelter, sleep clothing and reproduction.
The need for safety, personal security, employment, resources, health, and property.
Loving and belonging the midpoint of the hierarchy where friendship, intimacy, family and the sense of connection.
Esteem, is the level of need where respect, self-esteem, status, recognition, strength and freedom are found; and,
Finally, the top tier of self-actualization where the desire to be the best one can be is here.
In life we also want for so many things money, fortune, health, designer shoes, bags, a lifestyle of sorts, the finer things. That at times seem too far to touch but then when in our grasps at one costs….?
What about the in between? We seem to overlook this… Some call these whims, desires how about pampering… telling me this my indulgence…? So what if it is. We have seen that life will not spare us the obstacle so why not enjoy the journey.
Like all my indulgences I love to have the rewards. Yes, rewards as these are not needs nor wants but the trophy that I have earned when accomplishing my goals. I have many goals all the time that I set and every goal I set has a reward. It is important because without the reward you will not be able to find the motivation you make think you will keep it up but a little reward will help you stay focused.
About ten years ago I said to myself, if I get my Notary license as a reward I will buy a Tiffany & Co. pen. Achieved, purchase, crossed off list! I have some new goals that I have set for my next graduation that is coming up, for my new health journey, and recently I said I am going to become an entrepreneur, which is not easy and constantly work on my hustle for my blog, podcast, and licenses along with my credentials. I told myself the first offer I get I am going to get a mani/pedi. It happened this Friday… so what did i do, put a check box on my goal and went to retrieve my reward. This was not a need or a want but a part of my quality of life and recognition for my continued motivation.
I went to this beautiful spa in my town, that I always pass but I did not know they had the services I wanted. Oh My Jesus Christmas (OMJ) … absolutely stunning inside, extraordinary clean and so peaceful. It was amazing from the first moment of entrance. I was handled beautifully by the sophisticated luxury Attaché. I met with my specialist who kept up with the ambiance and provided a superior pedicure and detailed manicure that I was hoping for. This reward of pamper was opulent and yet in my reach. (I provided the link below)
My rules are the following for Goals Reward or Reassess (GRoR*):
Set the goal with a Plan A and Plan B.
Establish what the Reward will be, this is important because it needs to be something that is valuable and you really desire.
Both branches of the goal must have a timeline that it is the same process.
Plan B must be worth half of Plan A in order to help you in your back up plan.
If Plan A is achieved the reward is granted and enjoy!
If the Plan B, is used in lieu of Plan A, no reward is achieved and the Reassess comes in to play:
Reassess is when the goal doesn’t work out and Plan B is reached and must be reviewed to either make the timeline longer, review the measurable accounts of what was achieved and finally create a new Plan A and Plan B.
If Plan a or Plan B, is not achieved it is also suggested to Reassess the realistic process of the goal it may not be achievable at that timeline and the timeline may need to be longer.
Now, if the goal is achieved by all means reward yourself. I sure did, I will always reward my goals as it keeps me focused on attaining my next level of success. Just because a goal is reached this doesn’t mean to stop creating goals. In the beginning you may want to set multiple layers of goals with different timelines.
Create a Goal Tracker and Progress checklist to keep a record of your work that way it is measurable. You can design and use whatever you like. I have added my example that I use below, which I perform on excel and utilize the data on my journey of Fannytasticlife!
Now if my tracker is toooo complicated no worries. I also have this adorable book I purchased from Staples. The book is called, this girl has goals by Dayna Lee Collection
No one loves networking better than me, no one! Of course I am being silly but truthfully connections in all parts of interactions virtuality and in reality are extremely important to our mental health. One of my new mindsets is self-innovation. As it is important especially during this time because of our new, updated virtual personas. We need our connections and we also need to be able to flex with the times.
Prior to the pandemic, we physically were available even if we worked remote or at a specific location. During the pandemic, the change of visibility went from 98% to 0% in a forced quarantine. To move forward and pick up the pieces we need to embrace the new self-innovation discovery and remarket ourselves as well as our brands. The reason for remarketing must deal with being empathetic but how do we show that virtually. As we all know, there are no repeats of first impressions. First impressions via virtual would be our profile pictures.
At first glance.
Some profiles are missing images but we need to take into account that who we are posting messages to may be visual learners. This is why profile pictures really make the connection with potential people of interest.
If you work for a corporate environment and wear professional attire chances are in person you make a great impression and prior to the pandemic your branding was on point.
Currently, your image may need to adjust for a more casual profile picture if you are home working and if you are hybrid at may be a professional casual look; why would we do this? We make this slight change to stay relevant. If you decided to leave your picture on your profile without an update the feedback from many sources state that you are coming off stagnant and not in touch.
However, if you want to keep it crisp and professional, I would suggest updating to a current polished look. For example if you have the same picture from twenty years ago chances are when you do finally zoom meet out in person the connection wont feel genuine.
Let us dissect this slightly: If you change your profile picture very often this can come across as insecure however, if you change it periodically to stay relevant with the current events as they happen this comes across as approachable.
Branding pictures are treated differently: If your brand is one image no matter when it was taken but used for all media, I would suggest keep it consistent unless your brand changes. Being recognizable as part of the brand is not something you want to constantly change. For example if you use specific colors or patterns when people see this they will connect it to you. So it is important for your brand to reflect who you are and maintain consistency.
Our virtual persona is more than just our profile pictures although if you are marketing, even if the content is valuable data without an image, the post tends to be swiped, overlooked, or simply ignored.
Your persona is something to invest in. Recently, I wanted to review platforms by usage and the format is called MAU, which stands for “Monthly Active Users, and MUVs stands for Monthly Unique Visitors.” (Lua, 2020) Utilizing the data from Buffers top 21 list I compiled this graph below to show the most popular by the billions of active users monthly.
As we can see by this chart Facebook is the number one social media platform on the earth with over 2.3 billion monthly users. What does this mean, at first glance we can assume that the feeling of facebook and family connections is the purpose but for marketing you can reach 1/3 of the earth’s population for your business. Why not take that opportunity showcase yourself virtually here.
TikTok with 500 million MAU, has the most interesting pattern that grasp the full attention span and it reaches so many demographics who are willing to join and participate. Virtually brand new on the spot singers are turned into superstars. I personally felt that when my last post got 1160 that I was Tik Tok Famous.
With this platform you are limited to a specific window of time. The impression is so impactful that is truly keeps you watching and becoming addicted to it. This is great if you are the content magnet pulling in that attention. How does it work? It only gives you a glimpse that continues to loop. Therefore, capturing the intrigue and then swiping to the next content.
Many have wondered can 30 seconds be so appealing, and the answer is yes. We are attracted within the first second of a meme and most songs are not longer than 4 minutes unless it is a song by the singer Meatloaf. This is truly a winning strategy like the psychology behind casino design that allows for one user to see so much content in a fleeting period and lose track of time.
Linkedin has about 294 million MAU, which is about 13% of Facebooks grasp but still worthy enough for the connections. I utilize LinkedIn daily, I post and reach out and make sure to constantly update all my information to stay current. My profile is different depending on what media it is on for example my LinkedIn as seen below is simple, approachable and current.
Will I change this picture? Yes, but timing is key. For Instagram with 1 billion MAU, it is exceedingly popular. When you post for marketing you really need to know and understand your concept. This can be described as a storyboard remembering branding and consistency and when posting the message needs to come across is less than 1 sec, so this needs to be meme like and have a value of an icon. For example, when you see a swoosh, you know it is Nike or if you see that famous green mermaid you start craving Starbucks. These are the 1 sec recognitions of those brands and even if it is holiday or a distinctive design that fluidity flows with their brand. That is how you need to design your brand and how it lands.
Value of maintenance regarding networks is so important because staying connected creates a simple partnership of benefits. With two-way communication highways the value of information can be worth more than a monetary interest.
When engaging I know what my message is; what I want to say; but I do not know what I am about to hear. Therefore, understanding the links value is where opportunity can be for both parties. Consequently, I always like to learn the information and hear what the other person wants to convey. It is then I can adjust my message in the conversation. The other part is that sometimes, I make a connection and on face value we cannot offer the other one a direct benefit.
What we can offer is value outside of the connection like a compensation or return of value through interconnected contacts; a third party. Having this contact creates an advantage to the dynamic and making the bridge is the mutual benefit that we all can potentially share, which would be the common interest. Through connections, we can create fresh ideas, advances on projects and goals, opportunities, advice and strategy, support and new perspectives.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) predicts client’s likelihood to engage with your business and unite them with your strategy and potential profits. Effective strategy with social media can build a brand and the ability to read the data and project possibilities can potentially foresee the next move based on the tracked insight. Tools used by AI are hashtags, patterns, clicks and overall user behavior and tendencies.
Most social media platforms utilizes this data and if you turn your personal account into a business account you can review this type of data.
Analytics and Insights
Analytics and Insights, are the data tools that review the large pools of data collected by the AI. This creates tools for you to view specifics based on the analytical data and decide next moves and strategy. The steps of analytics are usually: collection, process, feed, review and compare.
Data can include demographic information such as: age, gender, marital status, income, education, geographic location and employment. If you are trying to reach these group you can adjust where and how you post or advertise on these social media platforms.
This data when viewed on either a timeline or over fiscal timelines can reveal crucial data. When compared to businesses similar to yours, creates the insight and hidden potentials.
Insights are very rewarding as they offer an opportunity for change, learning and competition.
There is always a fundamental opportunity to connect with a person and to respect that connection and offer mutual benefits. The social platforms will help connections prosper and relate while the technology will help to create a strategy to for next steps.
Thank you for connecting on this journey of Fannytasticlife!
Monica a vibrant career professional in New York City, who recently had just moved from Florida, but was originally a New Yorker. Making herself acquainted in Queens. Settling in with her family and matriculating her children into school. Terribly busy and always initiative-taking with her and her family’s health.
She previously worked for a hospital in Florida who made it part of their standard operating procedure and general office protocol to have the employees in her department receive yearly mammograms, which in her case were always negative.
In the process of her moving, she missed the examination for that year and while changing careers her appointment lapsed when she was due for her mammogram. In a self-discovery, she came across something that would change her life forever.
At 37 years old Monica discovered, that she had a lump in her breast. Immediately she had her self-checked out and it was determined that she had Breast Cancer Stage 2B; had she not let the examinations lapse she may have caught it before it had gotten so serious.
Stage 2B, describes “breast cancer in which: the tumor is larger than 2 cm but no larger than 5 cm” (Breast Cancer, 2020)
Monica underwent many procedures that changed her life forever. These procedures included and were not limited to: chemotherapy to shrink the two large cancer cells, full mastectomy, and followed by the radiation. She has now been cancer free for the past four years, thank GOD! Now, Monica is a self check activist,”learn your body and feel it.”
The cancer hit Monica and her family fast, and hard. Her life was immediately impacted by this and thankfully she found a lot of support with her family, friends and job who sponsored her during the annual Breast Cancer Walk, walking with Monica’s Soldiers.
Currently, her good friend is walking in her honor and you can provide sponsorship in the name of Monica Patino, a survivor of Breast Cancer, who is still fighting every day and staying strong and finding peace.

Driving in my car and feeling so grateful. I remember not having a license and taking the train everywhere, or bus, or just walking everywhere. Previously afraid to drive.
In my previous blog, Am I nervous… I briefly mentioned taking my permit and the sequel Licensed I was so happy that I finally got my license to drive; gratefully just appreciating the happiness and freedom I feel. Prior to cruising all over the place I felt afraid and because my husband drove me when we needed to go somewhere I really did not have the courage to drive. In hindsight I believe, I should have drove years earlier.
In 2017, for my birthday I came home and my husband surprised me with my dream car. I could not believe it but of course he got it right, red Liberty Jeep.
I was embarrassed to tell him that my permit expired and that I had no credentials to drive. So, I was truly inspired to run and get that license.
So many things in life we pull inspiration from.
Speaking of inspiration, I recently when deciding to podcast wasn’t sure how I would be received. I had been blogging for a while and was able to write how I feel and capture moments in story. When I started podcasting first I was nervous and insecure about my accent but once I started talking the feedback I got was amazing. This has become true therapy and life changing for me. Finding inspiration, ideas, themes has really driven me to want to inspire others.
The other day I was at the supermarket and I hear some one call me in the parking lot but not by my name but my brand. They actually said, “hey, Fannytasticlife!” I felt so amazing hearing that in an outside element. This beautiful person went on and told me how inspirational my stories were to her. What I loved was that she is not my family or someone on the payroll … but a true neighbor and friend to the family; in our town. I felt so proud of this moment and so did my sweet children who witnessed this act of inspiration and kindness.
My mind was endless stirring today. I made sure everything on my list was complete. However, I was in deep thought and over thought in over drive.
I dropped off my son and went to run errands, this time I did not put any music on as I wanted to just think and work it out mentally. I iron it out. However, I realizes my grocery list and had forgotten my phone in the store but decided not to go back to the car and get it.
I was thinking about many of the life changes and challenges that have come into my world and I was trying to ascertain the relevance with my though process today but I could not make the amends with my mind.
I got the bananas, the deodorant, a wanted some cleaning supplies and had them all. I heard my mothers voice in a thought of memory and maybe it was the conversation I had with my sister yesterday that brought this happy laugh to my mind.
My mother passed away two decades ago and when she was alive she always brought laughter to my tears. Anytime I was sad, she would instantly bring me joy. Although she would say being happy wasnt something she enjoyed.
I remembered we were watching a comedy special with that was so funny and I went and started coloring a picture of Groucho Marx, I showed my mom. She loved it. I asked her if we could send it to him and maybe he would send us an autograph. It was at that moment my mother explained that he was no longer alive and in fact had passed away. I started crying into my mothers arms, and asked her to promise me that she would never die. My mother promised; although I know it was a promise she could not keep.
My mother was always very serious about promises and words of honor. She said a promise was more valuable than money. She always expected us to keep our promises, which we were raised to do and which I still do to this day.
My mother would sometimes call me at work to “break up the monotony” as she would put it. Around that time my mother was admitted into the hospital and she would call me with a daily joke. Well one day, she called me and said “Fanny, the angels are here, they have come to take me. I am going to go with them now, I love you” and I cut her off and said, “mom why are you being so silly, I will come after work to see you but I am with customers now” she continued and insisted, “The angels are here please tell your father I love him, and your sister, I love her. Please know I love you all so much.” and with that we hung up. After work my sister and I went to see our mom and I had told my sister how silly she was. When we arrived at the hospital, it was to late as she had passed away.
The doctors told us she died during heart surgery and her kidneys failed, unbeknownst to us that she had surgery planned that day. That was one of the hardest life changing moments I can ever not want to think about. It was in my thoughts today.
As I was walking back to my car I couldn’t stop overthinking. I put the groceries away and I got in and grabbed my phone. I saw I had a text from a dear friend and he wrote lovely things that I needed to read. I started to feel love and joy in my soul. I remembered a joke and laughed at the thought of Groucho Marx in my car and it made sense.
We have one gift, goal and purpose of life, which is not to mourn but to rejoice in love. Having love is so healing especially for our quiet places.
It cant always be perfect but we can give love and get through life together I did today and in my journey of this Fannytasticlife.
I love this time of year, especially with Fall fashion. Yummy delicious weather for leather, a cozy sweater, fur, reptile, cheetah, leopard, animal, zebra, jewel tone give it to me now!!!! Meow!
For the beginning of the season I love to bring out looks that I feel showcase the inspiration from the scenery like fuzzy, pumpkin with hues of oranges and of course sleek patents leathers that take inspiration from September and transition into the October, November style.
I have three looks to sample, these are looks I have worn and own. Some may be available online and some are classic and not available but utilize the pallet to create your own look. These look all have a casual foundation and branch into Cozy, Classy and Crisp.
For the first look I have my yummy Cozy Casual look. As a Brand Ambassador for the Official Her Team, of course I am wearing my “Babes Empower Babes” shirt and you can of course utilize my FHBMGC discount to get your 30% off on any item on their website. I have paired the Tee with my favorite high tops from Vans and hoodie that I always tie into a bow, and tapered sweet french terry sweats. You can match any of your items to make the look work for you. Of course I am a big fan of so many sneakers and brands that can certainly be mixed and matched here.
I have two other looks that I love and they are my Classy and Crisp casual looks.
For my classy casual look, I always love black jeans with a 2% give and a lovely fun headband. Sometimes you need to throw it together casually and a sparkly band to hold the hair back with really complete the look. Now, to dress up the look we can wear a sassy sweater and soft sueded bootie as this will always dress it up. The look will is simple enough to keep it casual but fun enough to be sophisticated for a quick zoom call.
For a sharp crisp casual look I love to pair a denim either light fade or dark rinse. In the picture here I have a two tone jean from Shein, which is very flattering. Either a white poplin or in this look a puffy sleeve print like the one above with a fun pattern keeps the casual look playful however, what ties it all in to make it crisp are the sharp patent leather booties. Theses boots are versatile and perfect for this weather.
Of course, individuality is what I love to see however some items are timeless. I was asked the other day about a particular color, with patterns, styles and for each season. I do believe that you can do what you like… and I do have a chart that does focus fashion by season. If you know me, you know I love data and analytics as much as I love being a fashionista. This chart below organizes the particular season whether it is Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall into quarters divided by three month intervals. Monthly colors are identified followed by textures, Tones possible Nail or Makeup coordinates and Footwear. Obviously this does not need to be followed I use this as an organization tool when organizing my clothing racks.
Although I always say these colors (Black, White, Nude, Red and Grey) are timeless and work anytime of the year I do have y own color wheel. THis wheel in parallel to the data chart above and moves like a clock. Each number representing a month of the year.
A big part of the Fannytasticlife journey is fashion and what ever you decide to wear make sure you work!
I never knew anything else other than to work and work hard, which was my identity until, I understood my professional passion.
Are you driven? I think this is my DNA.
My grandparents, were always working they seemed affluent and relaxed but later I learned that my grandfather and grandmother were actually hard driven with many talents and skills. My grandfather had a Phd in Fine Art, he was a Teacher, Principal and Professor. However, this didn’t just happen as hw constantly achieved new merits and credentials in all types of work and trades. Overtime, he was in the Navy, owned a antique store as well as working on docks moving sand bags so he could support his family.
My grandmother worked for Brooklyn College for the Office of the Dean and she was a force to be reckoned with. They both would work together during working in the camps their children attended. By the time they retired from their professional career my grandfather served as President of the Brunswick Art Council and grandmother was right besides him as Executive Secretary.
My father and mother were both Artist. My father can do almost any trade (carpentry, electric, plumbing, exterminator) his real passion was music. He basically was an instrumentalist and could play any instrument he especially loved guitars. My mother was a painter and this brought her so much peace.
When my mother had to run errands, she would leave me with her friend who worked in a textile factory. I am not certain where as I was a child but I learned a great deal seeing people working very hard and then I would help the ladies and they would often send me home with treats and money in my pocket. When my mom would pick me up, she would insist they take their gifts back, but they were strong older woman who insisted she needed the help. My mother never liked anyone to help her financially as she was very head strong and determined to collect all her credit. I would usually put any money I found or had in my mother jar in the kitchen. I would later watch her scratch her head and tell my father she is an artist and no good at math as she always seems to miscalculate her apron (jar).
The actual lessons I learned from these experience was that the only way to earn money was to work hard. Be professional and have integrity.
There was one time I worked for a restaurant that I loved so much and we were bought over and now I was a barista on the weekends in the east village of New York City. I also worked for the a clothing store called Andy’s Cheapies, their schedule was very flexible as I would just pop in and start working. Because this job was very flexible with me I was able to also work during the week uptown at the movie theater. If I could go back in time I would not change a thing as my work ethic really came out from these experiences.
Around this time I had applied for another job that I always wanted to do and they hired I ended up giving up all the jobs but kept the restaurant, which I kept on and off for the next year are so only because I loved it.
Soon, this job began to become more of a career and my salary and standards really started to change. I was now married, and we moved to a different state. I started getting seizures and I realized I couldn’t do it all as sometimes I would have seizures in the street and train so at this point I was now married I decided to really leave all jobs and take a break. After the first month I was restless and so was my mind. I was given an opportunity through a friend (my early networking) who gave me high paying temp assignment. I love this experience I got to work so many places like, CBS, NBC, MTV, VH1, UFT, Nickelodeon, Spike TV … I mean really name the acronym I probably worked there. Here is when I started make connections that I have until today. Now, when working for Viacom I started to meet many famous people especially when I worked for TRL that is where I met Mariah Carey, Carson Daily… just to name drop. Although they probably don’t remember me I certainly ran home to tell my hubby about it. The thing is I was never starstruck as I have always encountered celebrities while growing up in New York City.
When I worked at Warner Music, I met a famous rapper however at the time I did not know who he was. I listened to so much music but the new rap I was current, so I had no idea who he was. I remember I made him wait in the lobby, and he said to me, “what’s your deal, don’t you know who I am, I am a celebrity…” I laughed and was “I am sure you are let me give you credit where it is due…” he said,” what’s your name…Fanny you must be Fantastic…” This made me laugh because I already was told this before him and this is my Fannytasticlife, right. I told him after that I need to correct him and that I am Fannytastic, and he looked at me as was like “for sure.” After this whenever I would see him, he would say that’s Fannytastic, and I would be sitting in the reception like “yup.” I remember hearing him on the radio being interviewed and saying “he dealt with a cool girl named Fannytastic” I remember thinking that was me… and laughed at that, I had to laugh.
Well around this time, I was given an opportunity to work for the United Federation of Teachers. At first, I was uncertain because the position was as an entry level temporary employee (temp)and the salary was lower than what I wanted. I asked my grandfather about it and he insisted I take the job and explained to me how he was a proud teacher and he marched with Albert Shanker. I took the job and it was one of the better experiences I have had. I was promoted several times to finally working for the Negotiations Department.
As I worked there, I still had other jobs on the side as I always felt it was needed and that was how I was raised. While with the Negotiations Department I apprenticed for Lucille Swaim, who actually hand wrote the first contract in 1965. She was an amazing leader and negotiator. She has a face mask in her office that I believe was a hockey or catcher’s mask and every time I saw it reminded of the story. She was in a tough negotiation where they threw the contract at her. It hit her right in the face, and they got her that as a gift for future negotiations. Lucille was that tough, an intellectually powerful woman. While working for her I was in school and she would tell me that I needed to maintain an A average, which I did. Although, it had nothing to do with my work she insisted on maintaining a high standard, which kept me wanting to strive for better.
I was then promoted to work for the Special Education Department for Carmen Alvarez, who was Vice President of Special Education At Large, she had over 250 thousand members in addition to General Education, Functional Chapter Leaders. Carmen Advocated for parents, children families, teachers and community and I had the pleasure to serve her. While working for Carmen I also maintained my role as manager of Negotiations, Manager of the Functioning Chapter Leaders and Liaison to Positive Learning Collaborative. This was one of the highlights of my career as I truly learned to develop professionally and refine creatively.
While working here I loved my job, this is the most important part of growth professionally to love what you do. Now, currently if you do not love your job do not quit, keep it, and find your passion. Who are you? What is your labor of love… meaning your workforce of love! Not what you do… but what you dream of that makes you happy. Now, your passion may not pay the bills and that is why you will keep the job that does so you can make your passions work for you.
Personally, I love law, comedy, motivating, coaching. When I was in college I was told to focus on one part of law to drive me, but I studied various levels of law and at took additional courses at other colleges to really have a robust level of understanding. Although, I was often advised to focus on one thing… this is a problem. Passion is not always a narrow road and I like to have a world of knowledge and to be a wealth of knowledge. Here is the difference. A world of knowledge is the information you attain in your growth a wealth of knowledge is what you learn as you grow that is considered valuable.
Collaborated with many lawyers one in particular that I gave a challenging time to, as I could not resist. He constantly would need Lucille to go over contract items. Lucille directed me to physically point it out as she did not want to be disturbed for items beneath her… yes… I know. So, this lawyer would come over and ask for direction and I would specifically say: Article 6, Section 2, Item B… and to his surprise it would be right there. The point here is that not only did I do my job, I knew my job inside-out.
Folks this is the secret right here it is called longevity, your specific trade secrets what makes you the most valuable about your job is understanding not just the direction, mission and overall understanding of your career but the same for the positions above and below, to the left and the right. The critical piece that separates you from the competition. I would even say in addition to your passion being the oracle will help you more than anyone else grow.
While doing this job, I would also do Paralegal work usually on the weekends, sometimes I would do notary services at a restaurant for the community outreach, Citizenship Now hotline for CUNY, I would also do other extracurricular, civic and volunteer duties that filled my calendar as I felt enriched.
We ended up moving deeper into New Jersey, although I lived Jersey City it was an extremely fast commute to work. When we moved it became three hours in the morning and evening commute with various trains, transfers, and connections. I had to rethink my career and lifestyle. I was not about to give up our gorgeous home. I worked with my beautiful boss and we were able to see I could retire. Although, I was three years shy of benefits I was able to retain my pension as I was vested. It is then I exited, and this was the was bittersweet. I was sad to leave but happy to start the next chapter of my life. They treated me so nicely with love, affection, and respect.
Being raised in this professional environment in all of these experiences in such a manner of respect, dignity and humanity I am often shocked when I work other places that I am not addressed with that same level.
Well, When I moved, we realized that the benefits piece was especially important because although my husband career had the higher salary the benefits were not where we required. So, I started working for a medical office where I had to use my pull from resource of skills. So over the years I was able to attain: Payroll, Medical Billing, Human Resources, Training, Workforce Development, Benefits and Compensation, Accounting, Paralegal, Notary, Management, Project Leadership and of course Comedy.
Then recruited to work for another company, and I took that opportunity. It was fun, thriving and technologically advanced. The experience was amazing and I was able to utilize my technical skill and become a Subject Matter Expert, which change the course for myself as I decided to enroll into my graduate program. Because I was not in a leadership role here, I was able to be sillier and more open with my schtick.
Prior to working here I was always the boss, in charge, almost Maleficent, however now I was able to relax and my comedian who had been hiding all these years was finally able to show herself.
Years ago, I mean decades, when I worked at the World Trade Center. I would spend time together in the West Village of New York at this place called the Olive Tree not to be confused with the restaurant Olive Garden. The Olive Tree had a Comedian Theater attached where famous comedians we all love and adore today, would perform there like Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Colin Quinn would always be there. Often, I would even go alone and usually a certain comedian would buy me drinks and ask me to be his girlfriend and I was there to have fun. Do not get it twisted I drank more Shirley Temples than I did Amaretto Sours, I was an attractive eighteen-year-old.
Anywho, the times were different back then, but the one thing he would do was try to get me on stage. He would laugh the loudest at my jokes and I was like no way. One day, I went on stage when I am not sure if it was Manny or Norm the owners was not there and I did three sets, they were about 10 minutes long. The first one was terrible, the second not so much booing and the third with the five people in the audience applauded. I really liked that feeling.
I would continue to go and hangout with them and really to observe and learn. I do not know if they remember me, but I remember this amazing time. I had a fun experience and to this day sometimes their movies come out and I just feel so proud and as if it is an obligation that I need to support them and watch it. Some of you may wonder why if they don’t know or remember me, it is because I remember when they would write their jokes on a napkin or say hey “tell me if this is funny” and I would sometimes say “nope” but it was so honest and genuine. These experiences helped me cultivate who I am today…. a failed comedian… no, a person with a passion for telling stories.
Remember your experience are yours, they belong to you. Your moments belong to you. I have had to rise and fall, and rise and fall again, over, and over but what stays constant is that I always stay true to myself.
Blogging since 2015 and recently due to the pandemic I started podcasting and this has become a new therapy and a new job. That I love!!!! When looking back on my life I never give into the idea that this is what I am doing now because I always turn it into whatever your “workforce of love” is. I then keep it separate from your job and make it your passion and work the hardest there and the smartest at you job.
Keep one foot at your job and the other foot in the reality, which is your dream. Your life does not stop at your job. Make sure you pay your bills and use the opportunity to fund your dream. You need to tap into the passion you yearn for. Live your dream, establish your goal, and reward yourself.
